Seto St. John’s bonfire
The most important bonfire was lighted in Miikse village, on 6 July according to the Julian calendar. The Miikse bonfire was lighted on a hill – Jaanimägi. Miikse stream flows at the foot of the hill and at its edge is a large sacrificial stone called Jaanikivi. According to legend, St. John rested his feet here and now the stone is considered miraculous, healing aching joints and fattening cattle faster. On St. John’s Day and Eve, people go to the rock and leave money, wool, birch branches, and, in the old days, curds. And they get relief if they hold an aching spot to the rock or wash their eyes with the water of Miikse stream.
Today, bonfires are made on Miikse village green – St. John’s Day is a church holiday, but not only that. St. John’s Day fires are made all over the region on the day according to the Julian calendar in different places. Starts at 21:00.
