23nd Seto Kingdom Day
On this important day, the people of Setomaa decide who will be the earthly representative of the mythical King Peko for the next 12 months – the ülemsootska. The festival day features pageantry and sticks to a traditional format: the Seto anthem is sung, the people choose the best artisans and the new ülemsootska, participants compete in oral verse and folk dance, Seto food and crafts are enjoyed, and the Seto “military” is out in full array. In the evening, visitors are invited to a village festival with music, leelo song and dance. Programme:
12:00 Seto Kingdom proclaimed
12:45-16:30 King’s competitions in various skills
16:30 Election of the ülembsootska, the leader of the Seto people
17:30 Award ceremony honouring the winners of the king’s competitions
18:00 Guest performers
18:30 Military parade
19:30 Evening party with the band Otava Yo
Seto crafts and beverages will be on sale. This is a good chance to catch the Seto Tsäimaja restuarant’s exhibition on life in Põhjalaager, an Estonian defence forces camp located in this area, 90 years ago. The Peko open stage will feature instrumentalists, leelo choirs and dancers.
